Freshman Year Reading 2

I liked the idea that community is key within the college life. It was spoken through getting involved in clubs, even in the once class that they had to take as freshman, and within the dorms there was community. The president of the university even stated that getting involved was something to strive for and if there wasn't a club that you already liked then there is opportunity to create your own. This is still true in the college system that everyone is trying to fit in somewhere and find their identity in a group. Students have a lot of opportunities to find new friends and new scenery to become involved with. Something that became an issue when trying to organize a community is that the people have to be willing to give their time and effort to making a community or group. The example used was when the RA of a dorm tried setting up a movie night, it failed because no one showed up. When asked about it they said that they didn't feel like going. An issue brought forth in this reading was that none of the students wanted to get involved because they didn't want to devote their life to something else. Students didn't seem to really understand the concept of what it meant to be a community. I agree with the idea that everyone has the decision to participate in a community and whether or not people do reflects their priorities. Something that I don't agree with is that it was stated in the reading that the reason why people move out of dormitories is because they don't like sharing bathrooms. I feel that people move out to have more freedom and responsibility. Community is all around you whether you decide to take part or not.
